BPV. Forge v/s Hyperboost
A while ago I said I would update everyone on
the 2 aftermarket BPVs. Forge and Hyperboost.
Now I have both and I tested both, and here is what
I think of each one. Both work well and you could
buy either one. Both are much better then the BOSCH BPV.
Forge BPV:
Quality: The Forge valve is well made and in my case achieves
air sealing simply through the fact that it is very well machined.
The pistion and spring are of high quality. For a SAAB you need
to order the stiffer "RACE" spring.
Operation: After some testing I have identified the 2 grease types
that work best. I recommend copper based grease which after you
apply it and drive a little creates a thin film and allows for excellent
piston mobility, also it will last a year (If you have a Ferrari dealer near by,
ask for BPV copper grease and get a few ounces). Grey brake grease also
works but needs to be checked every 3 month.
Greasing: Apply the grease to the piston and BPV seals with your fingers.
Apply just enough for the grease to do its job, don't smuge the thing.
Try to apply a layer that you feel but don't see all that much.
Hyperboost BPV:
Quality: This valve is a little less well machined, but through the use of one extra
seal it works just as well. The piston has a thin teflon coating which will make it
supperior in cold weather. The spring and piston are similar to the Forge valve.
The extra seal will also reduce the likelyhood that you get a non air tight valve,
some Forge valves have this problem.
Operation: Like the Forge valve the Hyperboost valve works well. There are no real
differences when both a properly greased.
Greasing: The Mobil1 fat seems to be some red stuff which can't be found everywhere
on this planet. Here in Switzerland I can't find it. This valve needs a 6 month inspection
interval and the correct grease... So before you buy, make sure you can find the right
grease.
Which one to buy?
Depending on the local availability of grease, if you can get Mobil1 grease get the
Hyperboost valve, this valve will also be better in cold weather due to the teflon coating.
If the red Mobil1 grease stuff can't be found and you can get high quality copper grease
in your area... go with the Forge valve. KEEP your Bosch BPV along with a set of plyers
if you get the Forge valve in an area with cold winters, you might need it on a cold day.
