about fuel filler flap problems..

by dude C 2013. 6. 5.

Spray it with the w40. Will work as a dream

Yup, it needs lube. The rubber gasket on the cap appears to dry out and stick. I brought it in to the dealer and they said it's pretty common.

My dealer mechanic says the design is not good. He adjusted the mechanism and it seems to work now, fingers crossed.

He recommended against replacing the part, suggesting the new ones are also faulty in the same way.

He also suggested that there is an anti tamper function. If more than five consecutive unsuccessful attempts are made in a row with the flap refusing to open then an ignition sequence is required to re-activate the mechanism. It seems it is electrically operated even though triggered by a push on the door itself.

Applying silicone type lube to both sides of the catch and silicone based rubber cleaner to the rubber/ plastic surround failed to improve the operation.

It looks terrible, but if you are careful, it does not do any damage. It is the way the dealer would open the flap, if any other tricks (like the credit card) failed.

The fuel filler door has been an issue on the early XF vehicles. We were replacing the hinge arm with an updated spring. First make sure the vehicle is unlocked. Press the unlock button on the fob, insert a credit card or other plastic item in between the fuel door and the body. Push in on the door at the same time you try to pry the door open with the credit card and it should open. If you keep trying it the actuator will time out so you will have to wait a minute for it to start working again.
